A scale in a cupboard behind the food processor gets used for special occasions. A scale on the worktop gets used daily. This sounds trivial and is the main determinant of whether the purchase changes how you cook.
The Friction Principle
Every step between deciding to do something and doing it reduces the probability of it happening. Retrieving a scale from a high shelf, moving two other items to reach it, and finding somewhere to set it down is three steps.

The same applies to what goes with it: measuring spoons for quantities below its resolution, and a pen for noting what you used.
The Drawer Problem
A scale in a drawer with heavy items resting on the platform is under continuous load, which is not ideal for the mechanism and eventually affects accuracy.
Where drawer storage is the only option, give it its own space or lay it platform-down on something soft. Do not wedge it under pans.
Protecting It From the Environment
Kitchens are hot, damp and full of splashes. A scale kept beside the hob is exposed to heat and steam, both of which shorten its life.
Away from direct heat, away from the sink splash zone, and off the floor covers most of it. Sealed buttons and displays help considerably, though no kitchen scale should be treated as waterproof.
Two Scales, Two Places

Splitting them by use rather than storing them together reduces friction for both.
The Test
If you find yourself estimating rather than weighing, the scale is stored badly. That is the diagnostic, and moving it usually resolves the problem within a week.
